A Spatial Econometric Approach to Measuring Pollution Externalities: An Application to Ozone Smog
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper uses spatial econometrics to analyze air pollution externalities. State-by-state source-receptor transfer coefficients that can be used as a basis for a location-differentiated permit system are estimated. Results affirm the importance of regional transport in determining local ozone air quality, although owing to non-monotonicities in ozone production the externality is not always negative. Because the origin of emissions matters, results also reject a non-spatially differentiated NOx cap and trade program as an appropriate mechanism for reducing ozone smog.

Using Spatial Econometrics to Measure Ozone Pollution Externalities
This paper summarizes my previous work in Lin (2010), in which I use spatial econometrics to analyze air pollution externalities. In Lin (2010), state-by-state source-receptor transfer coefficients that can be used as a basis for a locationdifferentiated permit system are estimated. Results affirm the importance of regional transport in determining local ozone air quality, although owing to non...
متن کاملMeasuring the Spatial Heterogeneity in Environmental Externalities from Driving: A Comparison of Gasoline and Electric Vehicles∗
Electric vehicles offer the promise of reduced environmental externalities relative to their gasoline counterparts. We determine the spatial heterogeneity in these externalities and evaluate several spatially-differentiated policies to correct them. To do this, we combine a discrete-choice model of new vehicle purchases, an econometric analysis of the electric power industry, and the AP2 air po...
متن کاملVisual-FIR for ozone modeling and prediction
Air pollution is one of the most important environmental problems in urban areas, being extremely critical in Mexico City. The main air pollution problem that has been identified in Mexico City metropolitan area is the formation of photochemical smog, primarily ozone. The study and development of modeling methodologies that allow the capturing of time series behavior becomes an important task. ...
متن کاملAn integrated air pollution modeling system for urban and regional scales: 2. Simulations for SCAQS 1987
A new air quality modeling system, the surface meteorology and ozone generation (SMOG) model, is used to investigate the evolution and properties of air pollution in the Los Angeles basin during the southern California air quality study (SCAQS) intensive field program. The SMOG model includes four major components: a meteorological model, a tracer transport code, a chemistry and aerosol microph...
متن کاملTotal Electricity Demand Modeling: An Application of Spatial Panel Econometric Method
This paper aims to model total electricity demand (incremental) in order to estimate price and income elasticities using provincial data and the spatial panel data method. Electricity demand at the province level is influenced by climatic zones, which can be divided into temperate, cold and sub-tropical. This paper uses time series data for electricity demand in Iran’s 28 provinces, taking into...
